Last Monday of the month @ 3:00

Homeschool Hangout is a great time to connect with other Homeschool families.  Homeschool Hangout is at 2:30 pm on the 2nd Thursday of the month.  Since homeschooling covers such a wide variety of ages we will have activities that are more geared toward their ability and interest levels.

We also have a section dedicated just to our Homeschool Families in the back corner of the Library.  This section consists of materials and manipulatives for our families to use as needed.  New material is added frequently so make sure you are continually checking to see what we have.

Video Game Design - Ages 5 - 13

This is geared and designed for children 5 to 13 years of age.  Using the software Bloxels children will be able to create their our game, characters, plot, etc.  They can use one of the Library's devices or bring their own.  We will get them set up with their own account and by the time they are done, we will have a gaming party where we can play each other's games.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The Bonham Public Library is excited to continue this great early literacy program that encourages all Bonham and surrounding families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. We invite you to participate in this free program and let us walk this journey with you.

Program Overview

The concept is simple, but the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, toddler, and/or preschooler. The books that are read during Library programs also count towards this goal. The goal is to read 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten (yes, you can repeat books!). Does it sound hard? If you read just one book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year; that is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around five years of age, you have more time than you think. The key is perseverance. Make it exciting. When your children reach a milestone, give him/her a small reward (stickers, books, etc.).

How to Participate

  • Register your child at the Library. Register at the front desk and pick up your first reading log, tote bag, and resources to help make this journey successful and stress-free for you and your child.
  • Read with your child. Studies have shown that reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding.
  • Bring your child to Toddler or Story Time. The books that are read during these programs are geared toward the age of your child and it is always fun to hear someone else read a story.
  • Keep track of the titles of any book being read to your child (this includes other family members and teachers) either on the log we have provided or on the 1,000 books app (available for iPhone and Android).
  • Rewards. When you reach 25 books, bring in your reading log to get a small prize. After the first 100 books, you get a really cool prize. For every 100 books, you get an awesome sticker saying "We've read 200 books". When you finished reading 1,000 books, your child receives a free book and a certificate, and they will be added to the 1,000 Books Hall of Fame.
